El Jobean Cemetery No index available
This historical cemetery is located 1.5 miles from the Myakka
River on the Doolittle Waterway, between McClellan Ave. and
Black Ave. in El Jobean, Fl.. The cemetery is believed to
be the final resting place of Spanish-Indian fisherman as early
as 1760. During the late 1700's an Old Spanish mission
tended to the needs of these fishermen. In addition,
between 1877 and 1923, it is likely that county prisoners that
were leased as laborers to the railroad, turpentine and lumber
companies were buried here.
The cemetery was presented to Charlotte County by Atlantic Gulf Communities Corporation as a gift in 1994. Currently the cemetery is an historical site only, and no markers remain to indicate the burial locations
